Remember December....Stepping into 2013...

Welcome back!  This month our blog features some writing from each student!  Each of their blurbs describes something they enjoyed in school during the month of December.  They are also looking ahead into 2013 and making some goals for themselves!  Read on!!!

Aadarsh
In December I remember when I was Jake’s Headliner Helper. It was fun always talking to Jake and calling the teams to get snack.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I’m going to write neater. I’ll do this by writing more slowly.

Abby
In December I remember getting my volleyball team. I was so excited to be on the Ireland Platypuses. I was with all my friends. We worked really well together!
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will study my spelling and math more. I will try to get everything correct on my spelling and math tests.

Alyssa
In December I remember reading George Brown, Class Clown. I liked it because George had tried to get a skunk hair for a scavenger hunt and he got sprayed. He had to take several tomato juice baths. I thought that was very funny! His mom even made him ride his bike behind the car because he was so stinky! That is why I liked George Brown, Class Clown.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will work harder in math and try to get the problem right. I will do this by practicing multiplication and division facts. I will try to practice mostly the facts I am having trouble with.

Avi
In December I remember getting rained on in science when we learned about the water cycle. I thought it was weird because it’s not every day you get rained on in science!
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I want to be more organized. I want to organize my desk and put my papers in the right folders.

Brandon
In December I remember when I got my volleyball team in gym because we had good chemistry. We worked well together.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will read more and write more funny stories. I will work hard at home.

Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will try to write neater. I will take my time and work carefully to do that.

Charlie
In December I remember starting volleyball in gym. I learned how to do the bump shot. Also I liked playing with my friends.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will work on my writing. I will do this by using more expression words.

David
In December I remember when Miss McCoy read us Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. I liked it because it was a funny book.  Especially when Fudge lost his teeth.
I will step into 2013 on the right foot by getting better grades in math. I will take my time and check my work.

Dylan
In December I remember learning division. It is helpful when I go to stores in real life. I now really enjoy division.
A goal for 2013 is keeping my desk neat. This is important because I need to be more organized.

Jake
In December I remember when I was Headliner of the Week. It was really fun getting to call teams for snack and to the carpet. It was also fun because Aadarsh was my Headliner Helper.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I hope to read for a longer amount of time. This will increase my stamina.

Jillian
In December I remember in gym when we did volleyboll, my team, the Ireland Platypuses won!
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I want to doodle less in class so that I can listen better.

Jonah
In December I remember being Weather Wiz. I got to report the weather to the class.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will try to get better at my multiplication facts. If I study them I will do better on my multiplication tests.

Jyotleen
In December I remember the Holiday Boutique. It was great to pick out holiday gifts for my siblings and friends, what a blast! We hope you enjoy them!
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I hope to improve in math. On worksheets I rush to be done. I need to take my time in subtraction questions as well!

Lindsay
In December I remember getting our volleyball teams in gym. I was happy to be on Portugal, and we are going to do great this year.
My 2013 resolution is working harder in math. I need to take my time trying to solve word problems. I will study my facts at home so I can master them.

Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I want to be a better reader. I want to have a better reading level.  I will read more at home.

Mehnuma
In December I remember my birthday party. I handed out cookies and cupcakes. I enjoyed the happy look on everybody’s faces.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will try to get all 4s on the next report card. I need to try harder.

Meja
In December I remember when we read George Brown.  It’s about a boy who burps a lot.  I also remember learning a lot about digits in math.
Stepping into 2013 on the right foot, I will practice my math facts more.  I’m going to practice more at home after I am finished with my homework.

Mikaela

Reading is on a Roll
By Jillian, Sophia, and Jyotleen

Books here, books there, books, books everywhere! On October 16 2012, the Levermans went to the Cantiague book fair. There were some great books on sale: The Big Nate, The Grimm Legacy, the Rotten Apple series, and more! There were some helpful parents helping us find books, “How about Captain Underpants,” says a parent “He is very funny.” We got some wonderful books at the book fair that we enjoyed!  Stay tuned for more articles in December!

Sharing some favorites!

Writing Wonder

By Lindsay, Carly, and Zarah

Do YOU want to know what WE published in writing during the month of October? We published personal narratives! Once we finished the writing process which is collecting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, we had a publishing party! At the party we shared our stories with our classmates. After we shared, we munched on tasty snacks and drinks, such as soft cookies, crunchy Oreos, and sweet apple juice. Stay tuned for our next published pieces in December!!!

Alyssa and Mikaela - proud authors!

Brandon and Charlie sharing their published pieces!

Abby and Carly - enjoying each other's stories!

Sophia and Jillian - excited to share and celebrate!

Sweet Social Studies
By Alyssa, Mehnuma, and Shriya
Welcome to the bakery! We liked creating a cookie in the shape of New York State.  We shaped the mushy gushy dough to look like NY. We put sprinkles to represent the Catskill Mountains and Adirondack Mountains. We used a big brown chocolate chunk to represent Albany, and Skittles to represent cities. Then our raw cookies went in the oven to get steaming hot. Next, we put a Swedish fish to represent Long Island. We put blue icing to represent the St. Lawrence River and the Hudson River. Finally, time to eat!

Alyssa, Jonah, Lindsay, Carly, and Abby - great chefs!

Jake, Dylan, and Zarah - enjoying their yummy NYS cookie

Special Activities
By Abby, David, and Jonah
We love to play games in the Levermans' class.  Read on to find out what the games are and how they are played...Have you ever played the game Guess That Number? We try to guess a six or seven digit number. When we guess digits, there are symbols that give us clues. Another fun game we play is Mumball. To play the game you can't speak, and you throw the ball lightly to someone.  If you don’t catch it, you're out! Our favorite special activity is Good and Welfare, which we do on Friday afternoons. We get in a circle and share something we are doing over the weekend, a compliment, or something we enjoyed in class that week. It's a great way to end the week!  These are some fun games we like to play in the Levermans’ class.
Someone throw to Mrs. Kupferman!

Worldly Levermans

Do you know what Cultural Literacy is? Cultural Literacy is understanding important people, places and important phrases or quotes. Some of the people and places we learned are the Empire State Building, Abraham Lincoln, Montauk Light House and RSVP!  In addition to cultural literacy we also learned about the presidential election.  Who were the 2 candidates? Barack Obama and Mitt Romney!  The 5 main issues during this election season were Education, Health Care, Taxes, Defense, and the Economy. In room 16 we learn about the world around us and have a lot of fun!

We used a TFK mini-site for most of our election info and news...Check it out:

Erosion Everywhere
By Aadarsh, Avi, and Jake

Did you ever go to the beach and notice there was less sand? That’s called erosion. One of the topics we’re learning in science is erosion. We did a project using a slant table, sand and water. We learned that if you change the variable there will be more or less erosion. We changed the variable by increasing the slant of the table, changing the size of the water tube and changing the sand to rocks. That experiment showed us more or less erosion. Now let’s hope the beach doesn’t disintegrate!

Avi, Charlie, Abby, David, and Mehnuma - observing erosion

Zarah, Matthew, Shriya, and Dylan - active scientists

Alyssa, Mikaela, Meja, and Jillian - focused and engaged!

Mehnuma - pull the plug!!

Math: Move With The Groove

By Dylan, Brandon, and Mikaela

In October we watched a funny rap about subtraction. The video taught us how to subtract in a fun and catchy way. We learned to subtract all the way to the hundred thousands place. We also learned rounding to the thousands. It was fun and challenging for some people. We just had an addition and subtraction test. The test had a lot of things such as short responses, multiple choice questions, and explanations.  We had to make sure to show our work! We are becoming great mathematicians!

Example by students of subtracing with zeros!
Watch the video to learn the regrouping rap!!!  Beware: you might start dancing!

During the several days that we did not have school due to Hurricane Sandy, we missed everyone very much!  We couldn't wait to get back to school, back to work, and back to normal.  We hope that everyone is doing well and is safe and warm.  Due to the limited number of school days in November (hurricane, nor'easter, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving), the Levermans will not be publishing a November blog.  Instead, check back for our "Remember December" blog post!  See you soon...
